Writer/Performer Geography Of Rain Info
In 2023, I submitted a piece of writing for the first time. My story, A Geography of Rain, was selected as a finalist in the national writing competition Scotland’s Stories Now, and I was honored to perform it on the main stage of the Edinburgh International Book Festival. Since then, I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with my husband, Jim, and daughter, Fiona McGrath, to develop a full-length multimedia performance incorporating original paintings, soundscape, digital media, and spoken word. Jim created all of the multimedia elements and a beautiful soundscape that brings the story vividly to life, while Fiona served as producer and director, helping shape and strengthen the narrative. The piece premiered with Fiona’s company, Los Angeles Theater Initiative, at the Hollywood Fringe Festival, and is now one of seven LATI productions set to be performed at this years Edinburgh Fringe.

When I left home in Scotland, I thought I was escaping the weight of my past. But of course, I carried everything with me—my grief, my history, my longing. Over time, I came to understand that while we can’t outrun ourselves, we can transform. Through reflection, art, and love, we can meet what has shaped us and carry it differently. From storms, the soft return of light.
This piece began as a submission to Scotland’s Stories Now, a national writing competition. It was the first time I had ever shared a written work publicly. I was honored to be selected as one of eight finalists and invited to perform A Geography of Rain on the main stage of the Edinburgh International Book Festival in 2023. Since then, it has grown into a full-length performance, integrating original seascape paintings, soundscape, and spoken word. It premiered at the Hollywood Fringe Festival and will be performed this year at the Edinburgh Fringe.
